Trends within the changes of UNL's football program

College football is a huge factor in the United States. Families can have ties to specific schools or have schools that they cannot stand just for the sake of sports.  So what happens when Nebraska, a state that pours their entire heart into their football team, fires their head coach? How does that affect the University in online searches? How does that change how current students and residents surrounding the college feel about the football program?

When looking at Google Trends for this topic I decided to start off with the basis of Mike Riley. When looking at interest over time here were no peaks at all in the trends of Mike Riley in the past year until around September 17th and then dipped back down until this past week where he now has a higher interest than the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Which, I can equate to the football game this past weekend and the decision to fire Mike Riley.

Since I do not have a page linked up to a Google analytics source or an account set up with Hootsuite to narrow down searches for Mike Riley I went to twitter and did a search and was warm heartedly surprised by the pour of positive factors that Mike Riley was mentioned in compare to negative. Firing a head football coach is never an easy decision but with a fan base like Nebraska it is a family you enter and once you are a part of it, a piece of you will always be there.

From Twitter to Facebook to Google searches I was presently reminded that sports are not all about winning. And even firing and rehiring staff for huge schools, such as the University of Nebraska Lincoln, sportsmanship and compassion are probably a couple of the most important factors in college sports.

Thank you Mike Riley for your dedication and compassion towards the Cornhusker football family. You were the leader the team needed after the passing of Sam. Nothing but good wishes to you and your future.
