Social Media has blown up on my lifetime. From my first
Myspace account in middle school to now having over 5 different platforms for
social media personally, it is no surprise that businesses are trying to
capitalize on reaching their target audience through these different platforms.
But, what is surprising is each platform can reach a different group of people.
It is no surprise that Facebook has the widest range of people using it.
According to Alex York in an article he wrote titled, “Social Media
Demographics to Inform a Better Segmentation Strategy” he dissects an array of
social media platforms and their users. Each age group within Facebook he
reports having over 62% or more of users with the age groups of 18-29 and 30-39
each having 84% or higher. He fully dissects each platforms audience with their
ages, locations, education, and income. All of this information can be
important to businesses so they can decide which platform would be more
beneficial to reach their audience. Once
the business has picked a platform to place their advertisements they can take
advantage of the targeting features to boost their advertisements towards the
specific group that will be most beneficial for their business. Within social
media sites there is a statistic that shows that 25% of people who see that
advertisement will interact with the ad (Meyers). That means if 100 people see
the advertisement that 25 people are going to interact with it. That is 25
people that were not on your site before. An important thing to keep in mind
while creating an advertisement for social media is to make them mobile
friendly. With nearly 80% of users on social media being from a mobile device
if your ads are not interactive or formatted for mobile it will end in users
scrolling right past the advertisement even more.
