How Cyber Monday Stole Black Friday
By Nyniet Tuom
"Shoppers visiting physical U.S stores on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday suffered a 1.6% decline from last year (ShopperTrak)". If you are into the early holiday shopping hype you most likely participated in some online shopping on Cyber Monday. What is cyber monday and what happened to Black Friday?
In 2005 a marketing team at Shop.org came up with an idea to recreate the shopping frenzy fueled by Black Friday savings but online. Thus came, Cyber Monday, now the biggest online shopping day of the year. "Robust growth marked holiday ecommerce revenue." This year alone retailing over 2 billion U.S dollars, with over 50 million people choosing to ditch the brick and mortar crazy and opt to shop from the comfort of their homes.
The future looks bright for ecommerce and this is only the beginning, with analyst predicting that we may soon see a full Cyber Week. With these insights it is fair to predict that retailers targeting consumers in the health/wellness niche, gourmet goods and books should spend more advertising dollars toward cyber monday sales.
