Instagram “Story” Telling

By Maddie Johnson
Instagrams story feature is a great way to literally tell a story and promote your brand, ad sponsors and more in an engaging way.
We are humans, we natural like stories
By using Instagrams story feature you are able to engage with your followers on a more personal basis. Instagram stories allow you to send realtime events to your followers in the form of a “story” that will populate under your name in the header of your followers homepage and highlighted in the logo of your Instagram page. You can encourage your followers to turn on push notifications for your stories so they never miss a beat of your content and you never lose your loyal following. Stories are great for promoting events, product releases, brand updates and a behind the curtain peek into your brand's daily operations.  The best part of it all is your stories are even more trackable and measurable then your Instagram posts.
How to use all of Instagram’s story features to your advantage
Not only does Instagram’s story feature allow you to connect more in depth with your followers but it also has a wonderful analytics feature built in that allows you to track user engagement. Through your mobile device you are able to look at your insights into your audience reach, number of story viewers and duration as well as the amount of interactions the story has had with your audience and new visitors to your page.
Poll engagement
Poll engagements are a great feature of Instagram stories, it serves as a call to action for your follower and gets your audience engaged with your brand.  Polls work as an opportunity for your followers to share their opinion or vote in brand promotional contests. Polls are great for getting your followers to help pick the next product drop, vote on the new name for your upcoming apparel line or say yay or nay to the new office color.  Polls are a great audience booster across all industries and help to make your audience feel like their voice matters to your brand.

  1. Hi Maddie,
I think this an interesting topic to discuss. Instagram stories are definitely changing the way we tell and see stories. Personally, I love creating Instagram stories. I think you can make them so personal and unique to fit your style. New outlets especially are using them more and more. Check out New York Times' Instagram stories ... they're worth the watch. Here's an Essentially, storytelling is becoming more than pen to paper.
To further your blog post, I think it'd be interesting if you talked about the data, especially for news outlets. What's their "click rate?" Are people more likely to watch the Instagram story that pertains to a reported story than the actual story? I think all of that would be interesting. Something else to think about would be how Instagram stories are changing. What other engaging features does Instagram include? What does that data look like? (are more people likely to use the poll engagement feature or the q&a feature). I think you have a great start so far! Keep it up!
