Law Enforcement Using New Software to Catch Sex Offenders

Sometimes sex offender threats get overlooked because law enforcement have to many cases to track them all. But thanks to Mike Cormaci the quest to do so just got a whole lot easier. Cormaci is now the co-founder of OffenderWatch—a software that helps law enforcement track down sex offenders. Today OffenderWatch is used by around 4,000 law enforcement agencies all around the country.

He says that the police like to look at a ton of different points on a map. "Why would anyone want to look at a bunch of points on a map? People just want to go from A to B." An analytics extension to OffenderWatch, called FOCUS, helps law enforcement identify which sex offenders need to be watched more closely than others. This tool became widely available last year and is being adopted as a way for officers to more efficiently allocate resources. Cormaci says that he's already heard feedback from officers who thought they already had a strong hold on the situation but were blown away by the abilities of OffenderWatch.

Just the idea of a tool to catch predators was something Cormaci stumbled upon. He says he was trying to pitch his idea of mapping the crimes happening locally but no one was interested. Although one Sheriff said there was one thing he was very interested in and that was the locations of his local sexual predators. Soon after that Cormaci built a data base and got his first client. "I said, 'Man, if this is valuable to me, this would be valuable to everybody."
