It's fall in the United States and everyone knows what that means: The Pumpkin Spice Latte has made its return to the Seasonal Starbucks menu. What even is pumpkin spice, ground pumpkin, spicy pumpkin? Also, how did this trend come to be?
Pumpkin spice is made up from a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. This spice mixture is then added to pumpkin puree to form American classics such as pumpkin pie or the beloved pumpkin spice latte.
Starbucks officially released the Pumpkin Spice Latte for the first time in January 2003, but the popular drink didn't reach star status in the United States until September 2012. The drink is seasonal and gets released each year in early September. So, what brought it to its peak popularity? Social Media.
The rise of viral social media in the early 2010's in the United States led to an obsession over being hip. Pumpkin spice latte is one of the trends that keeps growing with the years and I don't project it backing down anytime soon. The most popular trend for this upcoming year is unconventional pumpkin flavored things. Think pumpkin spice popcorn, pretzels and maybe even soft drinks. (?)
