Traditions by Rachel Becker

This week I wanted to switch gears away from how UNL uses social media and bring up the elephant in the room. Husker Football.  It's pretty obvious that we haven't been doing well this season.  Our team is filled with new freshman and coaches that are still relatively new.  I was curious if this is effecting UNL in anyway.

I know from personal experience, when someone is trying to pick a college they may look at the football team.  I had always envisioned going to a Big 10 school and having football games to go to every Saturday.  I feel that it is a big part to a college experience.  But, if our football is lacking, will that cause students to pick a different Big 10 school over UNL?

I looked up the Big 10 overall rankings and UNL fell to the last spot in every time, which made me realize the article must have been written by someone not from Nebraska!  Of course, in other rankings we do well, but I think a lot don't take into consideration that Lincoln is a big city.  I know that these articles might influence high schoolers to look at some of the surrounding states including Iowa.  So, what is UNL doing about it?!

I believe that the approach UNL is taking is celebrating our traditions.  Recently, their social media has been focusing on the lyrics to our fight song.  They also hype up the Tunnel Walk to the freshman.  They are able to run onto the field during the 6 weeks of welcome.  They have plenty of events planned for 6 weeks so that Freshmen and the rest of campus have plenty of fun things to do.  I think while our campus is still growing and football is getting back on track, they will continue pushing the traditions that we have at the school.
