User Experience Design and Data

By Morgan Bruggeman

User experience design is heavily based off of data collected through research. Without using data, we wouldn’t know whether or not our designs are delivering the best user experience. The data collected through quantitative, qualitative, and other outside research, is insightful however it needs context from users to know what to do with it. The best way to create a great user experience is to spend one on one time with your users, testing your designs and giving you their input. This way, you are able to really understand the customer you are designing for and what would be the most pleasurable way to complete a task on your site. It is simple to create a design that is easy for you to use, because you are the one that created it. However, you can’t predict how the average user is going to interact with your site until you spend time with your users. Using data can really highlight the issues and provide insights you otherwise may not have seen, this means that it really is an irreplaceable part of the design process.

Without user testing, and the implementation of the data we gather from it, we would simply be creating beautiful sites that may not function as we expect them to. The average person doesn’t know anything about user experience, and wouldn’t use a website the way someone who does would. This lack of data implementation could potentially be detrimental to the sites traffic and revenue. If something is difficult to use or understand, most users move on to a product that is easier and quicker. That is why the goal of user experience designers is to create beautiful, effective, and pleasurable websites for their consumers, and without data, it would be nearly impossible to do.
