Using Hashtags by Rachel Becker

This week I wanted to talk more about how UNL uses social media to interact with the students on campus.  Throughout the week I have been noticing specific instances when the campus has a certain hashtag to promote or share something.

First, on the UNL Huskers Instagram they have a weekly post about #ImAHusker.  They pick people from all different backgrounds and have them share their story.  The post focuses on the persons background and what they are passionate about.  I feel that this is a smart move by the university because it is showing the diversity we have on campus.  This helps bring awareness to people throughout the country to what is happening in Nebraska and who comes here.

The second example I saw was during the football game.  Because our school is sponsored by Pepsi, we are having a #PepsiHuskerHunt.  This is a challenge put on by Pepsi and UNL that has you take pictures to post on Instagram.  The pictures range from the red balloons, a selfie with Herbie and someone with a corn head.  They pick a winner every week and they receive $300 of Husker apparel.  When I heard about this challenge I was all for it.  I really like the idea of getting people involved on Instagram because it can be seen by so many other people.  It is also a way to see people's creativity.

I was interested to see if adding a hashtag to a post would affect the views and popularity of a post, and what I found on most of the articles I read was that a hashtag helps a post is because it organizes the content.  The people who are liking the post are interested in the same kind of content that you are posting about.  One of the tips was to keep the hashtag concise to reach the most amount of people.
