This week I wanted to change my topic away from UNL to the whole state of Nebraska in general and how we promote visitors and growth. I had a speaker from the tourism association in Omaha come into one of my classes, and I thought the presentation was very interesting. The women talked about how long they have worked for Omaha and how trends have changed. Now they really focus on social media and how they can get a lot of people to stop in Nebraska. These are some of the important topics that they brought up:
Omaha is a hub for businessmen to have layovers, or stop for a couple days for meetings. They also talked about all the visitors during the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders meeting. During these kind of events and weekends with football games, the city is packed. The Tourism committee wants to advertise all the places you can go while you are in Omaha. They talked about a few bars that have fun quirks that you would only be able to find in Nebraska. Another interesting fact they shared was that the original Reuben sandwich was created in Omaha.
They also talked about the bridge that connects Nebraska and Iowa. This is a fun landmark where you can be in two states at once. To help boost the awareness of the bridge, the committee decided to name him, "Bob". They created a social media account for him and started tweeting at other bridges around the country. They also tweeted at big celebrities coming to Omaha to come take a selfie with Bob. With all of his social media accounts, the tourism committee can track how many people are interacting with them. This gives them a good idea if their campaigning is working.
I think it will be interesting to see how the tourism in the Nebraska continues and what other techniques they use to encourage people to keep visiting.
