Why Instagram Matters

By Maddie Johnson

Instagram beats out its social media counterparts for many reasons the biggest being

Engagement,  post visibility, tendency to comment, and shareability.

While Facebook and other social platforms boast these attributes as well, Instagrams work better for the following reasons:

  • Mobile functionality: unlike it's competetors or its sibiling (Facebook) Instragm was designed with mobile first in mind. This means Instagram fits into your daily routin with less effort than other platforms.

  • Visual Nature: As humans we are naturally drawn to images and color.  Instagram is highly visually driven and allows us to engage more personally than any other platform.

  • Novelty: Because Instagram is primarily composed of visuals it presents a different form of viral marketing and allows us to see first with our eyes then understand through minimal text.

  • Function: Instagram is a extreamly user friendly platform and has been designed to be fast to learn and easy to use for audiences of all ages.  Becuase of this it's much easier to reach broader audiences and exposure.

Additionally - what doesn't work & why:

  • Adding a link: Instagram still doesn't allow site linking to posts, this can be frustrating in terms of directing followers back to your site but ultimately cuts down on spam -thank you. The Way Around - add the link you want to direct your followers to in your profile bio and refrence it in the post.

  • Lengthy Text: Because Instagram is so visually driven large chunks of text tend to not only loose their elegance in the platform but cause your follower engaement to stop reading. The Way Around - tight writing and well thought out captions. Noone wants to read an essays worth of information on their phone, get to the point in a couple of words in order to stay engaging.
