Baker Mayfield is the Analytical QB Prospect

Baker Mayfield is the Analytical QB Prospect

With the NFL draft around the corner, Quarterbacks around the country are trying to make their last impressions on team owners and scouts in hopes that they will hear their name called on April 26th. While Baker Mayfield won't have to worry about one of the 32 teams adding him to their roster, he still believes that he has what it takes to be the first quarterback taken in the draft. And scouts say that they not only use their eye to evaluate talent, but analytics too. One firm believer in analytics is New York Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan. "Its something every team has used, we're no different." He added, "We've done quite a bit. We've done it on the pro side and the college side." The Jets have employed an analytics department for years. While Maccagnan won't say how much analytics will influence his teams decision, the player that checks out best in that category is Baker Mayfield. Mayfield led the FBS in Independent Quarterback Rating according to Sports Info Solutions. This rating system accounts for dropped passes, throwaways, spikes, throws inside and outside the numbers and performance under pressure. When taking a look at Baker Mayfield's college career, he is the analytics prospect. This doesn't mean that the Jets will draft Mayfield at No. 3 but if he's available when the Jets are on the clock, it will defiantly be something to keep an eye on. Other top quarterback prospects include Wyoming's Josh Allen, USC's Sam Darnold, and UCLA's Josh Rosen.
