Cruise lines know before you do what ship to advertise to you, the excursions, the room type and even the price to offer. Carnival cruise lines is one of the many cruise lines that is using big data.
How do they do this? Carnival analyzes past customers, vacationers in general and economic and social trends. You may have never been on a cruise before but your data and online activity can still be helping these insights from data.
One of Carnival's goals is to steer you to the right ship, of their 100 ships ranging from family cruises to luxury voyagers. They do this with psychographics. By looking at who will pay $12 for a pair of Carnival flip-flops versus who will drop $100 for a champagne catamaran excursion, they determine what brand and ship is the best fit for you. They do not just look at a few purchases though, but they use a timeline for total revenue, starting from the time you decide to cruise till they day you get home. They use these psychographics to create profiles and advertise to keep previous customers but also use their profiles and psychographic profiles to predict and advertise to those who have never cruised.
So what all are they tracking? besides just purchases, Carnival has algorithms to crunch information about passenger behaviors, vacation trends and queries from travel agents and potential customers online and by phone. Through their algorithm results they make ticket price tweaks to each Carnival cruises to best attract customers. They can change on a daily basis how many beds they open up in one city versus another, they also find new routes that will promise to be financially rewarding to them and an exciting unforgettable experience for you.
Why is this beneficial to you? Well, there goal is to better meet your needs and expectations, target the most profitable customers per ship, which in the long term will lead to more revenue for them. Carnival through analytics finds the best prices and packages customized to you as an individual, giving you better deals and travel experiences while leading to an increase in revenue for them.
