How Hockey Teams SHOULD Use Snapchat

By: Corbin Smeal

Thinking back to my last post to the blog, I hinted that more pro hockey teams should use Snapchat. 31 of 31 NHL teams use Snapchat to this day. This is to be expected at the NHL level. They have such a large advertising budget and it only makes sense to have some of that allocated to Snapchat.

Hockey teams can create engaging Snapchat ads that play while viewing stories, make fun geofilters that fans can use on their own photos and videos, or even make a Snapchat lens with virtual helmets or other equipment that users can try on in their photos. Snapchat ads are a great way for users to show their support and unknowingly advertise their favorite teams to friends and family.

Another reason that hockey teams should use Snapchat is that the platform can offer fans a new perspective to the team. Because Snapchat is a strictly mobile social media platform, employees can simply log in to the team's Snapchat account and begin creating content. For example, employees can travel with the team and show the team preparing for a game on the road that most fans wouldn't otherwise see. They could film players packing up their gear or getting on the plane to get to their destination. This would offer a more personal view into the pro hockey lifestyle. Also, they could use their phone cameras to conduct less official interviews with the players that might not air on TV. Snapchat is also great for any sports team in the hands of any employee that might be at the ready to film the teams shenanigans and possibly get that next great clip that goes viral.

The bottom line is that professional hockey teams should definitely use Snapchat to their advantage, after all Snapchat is the most fun way to advertise and is arguably the most cost effective way to spread a team's message. Snapchat lenses cost an average of $450,000 for a typical day, and up to $750,000 for a high demand time of year. With most NHL teams averaging 17,500 spectators in attendance if even half of them use their Snapchat and apply the filter for the game teams can greatly increase their exposure to a huge audience.
