How to Learn to Love Data
Okay… so remember your statistics
class? Yeah, super gross right? Standard deviation? Yuck! Probability? K, bye.
Analyzing data in the real world is not
like your stats class (sorry, Professor). In 2018, you don’t need a fat wallet
to access big data. It also takes 5 seconds to access data rather than 500
hours.
Now data is more critical than ever. We
have so much information, with so many different variables that we have to
break through the data noise. Anyone can get his or her hands on good, accurate
information… Not just someone who has a Ph.D. in numbers.
So here’s a bullet point list why you
need data in your life:
1.
Provides objective answers. No one will
argue with your quantifiable information that backs up your argument.
2.
Data allows us to find HONEST
information. From what data scientists gathered, people lie on surveys. The
only way to find the truth is through real-time data.
3.
Having data gives us information on
small subsets of people. You can zoom in on the minds of certain individuals.
4.
We can experiment!! You don’t need a
lab coat and goggles to create a hypothesis. With all data, you can test
different theories such as which headline to attract customers.
Okay, now you have just consumed all
this information… what’s next? You
have to digest it.
This is the time where you make sense
of the information and create an insight.
So
what is an insight? And why on Earth is it important?
An insight is the underlying truth of a
certain business or thing. This is so important because you determine the why
behind the facts. Data is only so useful if you have the right conclusions.
To create a good insight information
you have to dig deeper than “she listens
to music.” As I said, you have to create the why behind the what. So an
insight for someone who listens to music all the time could be, “she listens to music to distract herself
from her daily commute to work and priorities.”
Okay so now, you why you should love DATA!!
