Social Media & The Music Industry

By: Dakota Anderson

Social media has had a major impact on so many different aspects of our everyday lives. If you're upset with your experience with a company, you tweet them. If you start thinking about an old friend, you don't call them - you stalk their Facebook profile. You use Instagram as a way to impress people.

But social media's impact doesn't stop there. The music industry continues to evolve with the growth of digital and social media. The data that we are able to collect online is crucial to record labels and artists. Faster than ever, they can find out a reaction to a particular song, album, or music video simply by looking at social media.

One reason social media data is so important for the music industry is that they are able to see the reactions the public has to music. A solid music marketing strategy needs longevity. If the label/artist are able to see that a song is getting a negative reaction on social media, despite it receiving a good amount of streams or purchases, it's unlikely the next song to be released would be successful, so they could rework their strategy.

Record labels are also able to see which artists are being talked about more and at what times of the year to help better their marketing and release strategies. This could also help them find new talent to bring to their label.

Social media has forever impacted our world and will probably continue to change it. While right now it may not seem important to you to know how many people love Beyoncé or how much people talk about Taylor Swift, generations to come will be able to learn so much about this time in human history simply by looking through the data that we get via social media.
