The Things We Wouldn't Expect to be Netflix data
By: Carter Spindler
When people first think about Netflix, they instantly think movies or TV shows. When thinking about how Netflix uses data and analytics, most people would think that the data is gathered based off of what shows and movies people watch. However, although this is true, Netflix looks at much more when gathering data. There are currently over 117 million users approximately on Netflix and that leaves a very broad and diverse pattern of data and viewership. When Netflix looks at data from users, they have the ability to look at so much. Netflix can look and see at what time of day a streamer generally watches their content. Netflix can also get data about where the streamer watches their Netflix as well as what kind of device they are watching it on. When the streamer watches a show on a different device, Netflix can look and see if the views of shows or movies changes when they are on a different device compared to their usual and most popular one. These people are called "Cord-cutters," and they are slowly changing the streaming business to a mobile world. Netflix can also track through data on if you skip the credits of what you are streaming as well as looking at the ratings you give and your searches on the website. Netflix uses all of these insights to make the experience for the streamer much easier and more useful. This data and useful insights hold Netflix as the most popular mobile streaming platform with 75% of Netflix being in homes across the United States.
