Everyone has their favorite movie from when they were little, or maybe your guilty pleasure is a classic film from the iconic 80's period. This is exactly why Hollywood's favorite trend is remaking those classics that everyone has a special place in their hearts for. It's true, constantly coming up with new movie ideas can be exhausting. However, has Hollywood taken it too far with their remakes, and how far can you push the boundaries when it comes to unoriginality? So just how original is Hollywood? 38.5 percent to be exact. That's the percentage of the 100 top box-office draws from each of the last 10 years that were not an adaptation, sequel, spin-off, remake, or other work. The proof is in the pudding. Why should a studio make the riskier decision and come up with their own material when the financially smarter decision is to turn to pre-established material. The statistics show that assured success will come from a movie that has already occurred or at least based off a book. So if it pays to stick with existing material, why even pay to make an original film? There are some genres that do perform better with originality such as comedy. However, some genres such as science fiction rely heavily on existing content. I guess when it comes down to it, you just better know your audience and what the people are looking for, and they will never lead you astray.
