Since the beginning of YouTube, which was created on February 14, 2005, people questioned how the site would work or how it would help society in general.

We all know that everything you need to find is a just Google click away, but when you tend to want to watch an informative video on how to put a air in your tire or even how to take a test at the Digital Learning Center, the answer is found on YouTube. Or maybe you are like me that likes to be on YouTube for entertainment purposes. I tend to watch YouTube at least 5 hours of my day because it brings a more real approach to entertainment vs. how cable is more a lot more scripted than videos produced on YouTube. YouTube is the platform for creators to share their content, it's not like Facebook or Instagram, even though they have tried to be more like YouTube. YouTube is still the sole provider of video content for entertainment and educational purposes.
In the summer of 2018, I wanted to start my own YouTube channel because I was inspired wanted to get practice to hopefully become a film maker one day. So my girlfriend and I, started B & Price. Being a creator of YouTube allows you the basic tools to become your very own digital analyst. YouTube has the tools to trace several different things. The dashboard displays the a list of your videos, comment sections, analytics, and at the top right screen displays the amount of views and subscriber count.

From the dashboard display you can view the number of total views and the subscribers count, but when you click on the Analytics page you get data from your channel from last 28 days. Also keep in mind that since YouTube is owned by Google you are using Google analytics on YouTube. YouTube's analytics breaks down the information into categories. For example, you can get the data for the total watch time in mutes, the total number of views, and average view duration. You can also see if the data came from subscribed or not subscribed users. This what the overview of the data analytics looks like on YouTube:

This is where Beverly, my girlfriend, and I decided to start advertising ourselves on Instagram and Facebook, because we realized that a lot of people who were watching our videos were not subscribed to our channel. So when I said that we had just started our YouTube channel I meant it, because you can see our numbers aren't relatively high right now but they will be one day. Using the different categories of data you can determine where you want to set your focus on. You can see by this next picture that YouTube already has set some default categories that you can focus your time on.

As you can see YouTube analytics is just the basic understanding of how to use digital analytics with working on your own YouTube channel. This also how a lot of YouTuber decide the best time to reach their audience be seeing what time their target market is actually on YouTube. I hope this helps you getter a better understanding of YouTubers use digital analytics to figure out their best way of reaching a target and the data they use to help grow their YouTube channel.
Summary:
This was just small brief introduction to where to find YouTube analytics and what it means to YouTubers. I showed the different way Beverly and I figured out what analytics actually meant to our YouTube channel.
In the next post We will be looking into a YouTuber's life and going into detail about how analytics actually work. Tune in next time to find out more about digital analytics in the YouTube world.

Hey Ray!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great topic. YouTube has definitely taken the world by storm. It's awesome you've jumped on the YouTube train, too. Seeing your analytics is super interesting. I think it'd also be cool to see what types of YouTube videos tend to be more popular than others. Is it best to stray away from doing YouTube trend videos or is it beneficial to do them to be "relevant?" I think it'd be cool to get into the nitty-gritty data of YouTube.
Great work!
