Big Muscles, Big ...Numbers?

By Hiep Ngo

In the daily lives of the average individual living in the digital age, it's no secret that numbers play a huge role in everything that we do. From ordering items on Amazon that will be delivered the next day by drones to winning millions of dollars from a lottery, numbers play a vital and important role in society and that's not going to change anytime soon.
Although it seems as though we are controlled by numbers and that it can be daunting at times, we need to realize that we also can use numbers/data to control our lives and help up accomplish daily tasks and goals. For example, anybody that plays fantasy football or watches sports knows that numbers are everything. Numbers can help your team win, lose, tie, etc.
Stepping even closer to an individual’s life, numbers can mean everything from a raise at work, a time to wake up, or duration of a load of laundry. Everything is a numbers game and everything can be tracked, monitored, and recorded into data. This data itself is not an inherently good or bad thing. Like anything else, it is the user who ultimately decides whether the use of data is good or bad.

One example of data being used for good is the way that athletes use data to monitor and assess their performance. Before the NFL draft occurs every year, there is a combine in which potential draftees are measures on their performance in a multitude of physical tests. These assessments are then used to compare players to other highly talented players. From these assessments, teams can make a more informed decision about who to draft and what position best suits the player.

Another sport that uses numbers/data to track and assess performance is bodybuilding. One can argue that the majority of the sport of bodybuilding is numbers and data...
