Last weekend was relatively slow for the box office. There were only a handful of movies that premiered nationally, so let's take a look at both Happy Death Day from Universal Pictures and The Foreigner from Huayi Brothers Pictures. Before you read this I would like to let you know – I wrote a general plot of these movies, but did not give any important information away!
Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day premiered on Friday the 13th. This date is sometimes considered to be "bad luck." The movie was about a college girl who woke up and repeated the same day over and over again. Every night, she would be killed in a different way and it wouldn't stop until she figured out what was happening. When it came out last weekend, it earned the number one spot in the box office. It had a weekend gross of $26,039,025.
Looking at analytics for Happy Death Day turned out to be pretty interesting. There were 26.3 million search results, with a volume of 110. The CPC couldn't be found, according the website I was on. "Happy days death" actually had more results than Happy Death Day did. The volume was at 210. The most related search results however were things such as "in theaters Friday" or "Friday the 13th movie."
The Foreigner
The Foreigner, a movie with Jackie Chan is about a father who is out for revenge. His daughter was killed in a bombing and he wants to get back at the people who killed her. The Foreigner had about half the gross the Happy Death Day did, coming to $13,113,024. It came out to be number three in the box office, falling behind Blade Runner, which had come out a week prior. Blade Runner had a weekend gross of $15,492,244. Overall, it did pretty well for the weekend.
Analytics for The Foreigner were not quite as impressive as they were for Happy Death Day. There were 6.9 million search results for this movies. The cost per click was found for The Foreigner, which was $1.43. Something that really stuck out to me was there were more search results for Jackie Chan, who was the main character of the movie. Whether it was "Jackie chan movie" or "movie chan," people knew more about the character than the actual movie title. Something that should be noted as well is this movie was released in China two weeks before it was released in the United States.
I hope you're enjoying my blog and let me know if there are any movies you would be interested in hearing about!
