As you can probably tell from my previous blog entries about hockey and it's ties with big data along with data analytics, there isn't a whole lot to look at! hockey has always been a rather old school sport. For example most of the gear was the exact same from the 1980s until I was a player and was getting more competitive. Pads were made of simple styrofoam and plastic, sticks were made with wood and the most innovative one that you could get in 2002 was made out of aluminum, a very malleable metal that wasn't suited to take the beating that a hockey stick endures. Hockey manufacturers smartened up and made gear that can take the beating that is required by the nature of the sport. While the manufacturers of hockey continued to evolve, the data collection and analytics part of the sport did not. The sport of Ice Hockey has always been a pen and paper type sport. That is until recently when I stumbled upon the dumbest hockey analytics sight that I've seen to date.
The first thing I want to look at is where it says 60 shots on goal in the top right statistic, and then below on the left it says 140 shots. In hockey, a shot doesn't even register as a statistic unless it hits the goaltender or is in the net. The 140 shots is just some number that ICEBERG Sports Analytics pulled out of their asses.
The second is the quote that says "Hockey has limited data right now". This statement is in a way accurate, but why is it just plastered on the page like this? It looks like a paragraph heading, however there is no text that follows other than those dumbass stats that we looked at previously. I don't get it.
The next thing I want to put on blast is the "capturing the game every 0.1 seconds. This is the a very stupid thing to put on your website to promote your service because that means that you are supposedly using a camera that films at ten Frames Per Second. I just hope you guys understand how brutal that would be to actually watch. These claims are brutal to put on a website and anyone that would by into this ICEBERG bullshit is just ignorant.
The final thing that I want to shed some light on is in the top left. "12 hours process time" and then next to it the site says "Cloud online access 24/7". Like what are you even saying? My favorite bit of this entire site is the "WHO CAN USE THIS?" banner that leads you to a scrolling menu below. My answer would be "What even is this service?" and your guess is as good as mine because none of these buttons are clickable and the menu buttons at the very top of the sight simply scroll you down to each section of the site that I've shown here. If I could, I would personally have this website taken off the internet. This company is an embarrassment to the hockey community.
Feel free to check it out for yourself! or, just don't. iceberg.hockey
