How Netflix's Top Competitor is Sleep

Hulu? No. Youtube? No. HBO? No. All of these are what you would expect to be the top competitors with Netflix, but they actually are not. Netflix's top competitor is surprisingly sleep. The concept of "Binge-watching" consists of being able to watch a certain show for a long amount of time during the day. Your goal is to finish a certain number of episodes or seasons in a day compared to doing anything productive with your day. It is becoming more of a cultural norm to watch Netflix in their free time and would rather be watching TV shows than getting their actual sleep. This makes Netflix compete with the need to close your eyes and go to sleep. Instead, people insist on staying up and watching their TV show because they are so involved and locked in with the show. Sleep is needed in the times of people having to do very important things the next day and it is vital to keep you healthy. However, the culture today is to stay up-to-date with trending television shows and Netflix Original shows on Netflix. People talk about these shows in conversation all the time and no one wants to be left out and not have any knowledge about a popular show that everyone is watching. Sleep is the unexpected competitor and has Netflix using data and many different aspects to keep people awake and keep on watching their shows instead of the healthy and useful sleep they need.
